❌ Don't say: Australian
✅ Say: Aussie
Example:
He’s Aussie.
2. How are you?
❌ Don't say: How are you?
✅ Say: How ya going?
Example:
A: Hi, how ya going?
B: Not bad, you?
3. Friend
❌ Don't say: friend
✅ Say: mate
Example:
A: Hey mate!
B: Hey! How ya going?
4. Afternoon
❌ Don't say: afternoon
✅ Say: arvo
Example:
A: What are you doing this arvo?
B: I’m going to the beach with my mates.
5. You're welcome
❌ Don't say: you're welcome
✅ Say: no worries
Example:
A: Thank you!
B: No worries!
6. No
❌ Don't say: no
✅ Say: yeah nah
Example:
A: Did you pass the driving test?
B: Yeah nah.
7. Yes
❌ Don't say: yes
✅ Say: nah yeah
Example:
A: Do you want to go to the movies this arvo?
B: Nah yeah. That sounds great.
8. Breakfast
❌ Don't say: breakfast
✅ Say: brekky
Example:
A: What did you do this morning?
B: I just woke up and had some brekky.
9. Swimsuit
❌ Don't say: swimsuit
✅ Say: bathers
Example:
We’re going to the beach this arvo so don’t forget to bring your bathers!
10. Kangaroo
❌ Don't say: kangaroo
✅ Say: roo
Example:
I saw a roo jump across the road on my way home from work.
Conversation
A: Hey mate, how ya going?
B: Not bad, thanks. You?
A: I’m good! Do you have any plans this arvo?
B: I’m going to a Spacey Jane concert this arvo. How you heard of them?
B: Yeah nah. I haven’t heard of them.
A: Oh, they’re an Aussie band. They’re really good. What are you doing this arvo?
A: I’m going to the beach with some mates tomorrow and I need some new bathers. So I’m going to the shops this arvo.
B: Be careful driving there. There’s a lot of roos on the road lately.
A: Thanks, I will be careful.
B: Let’s catchup sometime. Are you free on the weekend? Let’s get some brekky.
A: Nah yeah. That sounds great. Thanks for the invite.
B: No worries, I’ll text you the details.
A: Great, see you on the weekend.
B: Bye.
